The Future of

C-Capsule is a tradeable carbon certificate generated for verified Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). Unlike carbon offset or emission avoidance certificates, C-Capsule certificates record CO2 that has been durably removed from the atmospheric cycle. C-Capsules are provided under a global framework, accessible to all actors from governments and multinationals to small businesses and consumers. C-Capsule facilitates primary and/or additional revenue for CDR project developers. Consumers and governments are provided with the evidence they need to demonstrate their commitment to neutralising their residual emissions footprint or as part of their sustainability accounting.

Key Features

C-Capsule certificates help meet the growing demand for evidence of CDR activities as organisations work toward net zero targets. The C-Capsule framework provides trustworthy, universal access to the Voluntary Carbon Market for all actors.

Efficient and Reliable

C-Capsule provides an easy to implement solution that addresses the “burden of proof” challenge encountered in conventional carbon offset markets. C-Capsule both reduces the cost and increases the credibility of voluntary carbon action by supporting durable CDR solutions.

C-Capsule allows a conscious and evidence-based choice for CDR activities from a preferred technology or process. C-Capsules are uniquely attributable to verified facts relating to the durable sequestration of carbon that would have otherwise remained in the atmospheric cycle.

Universal methodologies can be problematic when evidencing complex or unique processes. We set clear eligibility criteria for technology developers to obtain C-Capsules, providing opportunities to participate in the market through using robust methodologies for every solution.

Durable Sequestration

Developers must evidence both the capture and sequestration of CO2. C-Capsule assures consumers of the durability of carbon sequestered over a 100-year time horizon.

Third Party Verified

C-Capsules are independently verified at the point of issuance based on measured CDR activity. Each facility is third party audited prior to issuance to ensure adherence with the relevant methodology.

Supporting Compliance

C-Capsule is designed to support consumer claim standards such as the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), the Voluntary Carbon Market Initiative (VCMI), Market Integrity Initiative (ICVCM), CDP, and others to help consumers fulfil corporate sustainability claims such as net zero emissions.

Am I eligible for C-Capsule?

Yes, if you can provide robust evidence to support your claims.

The first step is to develop a CDR methodology that complies with C-Capsule’s ‘Methodology Protocol’. This document outlines the quality threshold for developers to register their facilities on the Registry.

All methodologies are subject to independent approval by the International REC Standard Foundation. Methodologies are assessed on their compliance with our high-quality issuing criteria:

  • Measurable: C-Capsules represent CDR activity which can be precisely measured. Projects adhere to methodologies with identifiable measurement points where the volume of CDR can be determined through robust and reliable metering equipment.
  • Durable: C-Capsules demonstrate the durable sequestration of GHG that has been purposefully removed from the atmospheric cycle. Every methodology reflects a defined probability of durability set against a 100-year time horizon.
  • Verifiable: C-Capsules are independently verified at the point of issuance to clearly identify measurable carbon sequestration and ensure no double counting. Facilities are audited prior to issuance to verify that their characteristics adhere to the associated methodology.
  • Additional: C-Capsules convey CDR activity that would not have otherwise happened without carbon finance. Where significant non-carbon finance exists, additionality can be demonstrated where investment is required, barriers or risk are present the activity is not common practice.

C-Capsule Benefits

Technology Developers

Owners of CDR facilities can obtain a C-Capsule for every net tonne of CO2 captured and durably sequestered.

Processes able to evidence independently verified CDR data are eligible for C-Capsules. Facilities must conform to a defined CDR methodology which meets the eligibility criteria of the C-Capsule Methodology Requirements. Facilities are initially audited to establish the metrics of capture, with the objective of a simple, low-cost measurement. Direct carbon emissions from facilities (Scope 1) are periodically audited and deducted to establish the net tonnes of CDR.

C-Capsules can be sold as soon as they have been issued, providing a rapid cash return on CDR activities.

Carbon Emitters

C-Capsule provides a reliable mechanism for companies to mitigate their carbon footprint toward, and beyond, net zero. Organisations can either engage directly with facility operators or use market intermediaries to manage their portfolio. At the end of the process, organisations receive a redemption statement uniquely identifying all claimed C-Capsules, including details of the originating CDR facilities, the process used, and the dates when the CDR occurred. This statement can be viewed directly on the C-Capsule registry to support audit of claims.

Dependant on the type of CDR process, emitters may be able to select C-Capsules that relate to their supply chains e.g. airlines could purchase C-Capsules from carbon fibre composite manufacturing.

Market Intermediaries

We recognise the key role played by market intermediaries in providing sustainability reporting services to their clients. C-Capsules carry factual information about every tonne of CO2 removed, allowing intermediaries to deliver bespoke portfolio management services to their clients. As account holders, market intermediaries can manage client accounts securely and confidentially.

C-Capsule encourages governments to adopt common global standards for reporting. Recognising that governments are sovereign, C-Capsule services are designed to enable government authorities to seamlessly undertake any role within the service on a country-by-country basis, fully compliant with the International Attribute Tracking Standard.

Insurers and Risk Managers

Insurers will play a critical role in carbon markets. The shift from avoidance projects to removals brings new opportunities centred around the durability of sequestered carbon. C-Capsule is designed to work with insurance companies and markets, helping manage the risk of reversal and supporting confidence in CDR technologies, setting a baseline for high-quality carbon certificates.

Fair Treatment

The C-Capsule service is provided under a universal tariff to ensure non-discrimination and a ‘level playing field’ in the marketplace. Our service providers are not permitted to participate in the C-Capsule market or have any direct interest in the price of C-Capsules.
